The Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, in collaboration with the Centre for European Perspective (CEP), proudly introduced the European Digital Diplomacy Exchange (EDDE) in 2017. This groundbreaking initiative has been dedicated to empowering European governments to harness the potential of emerging technologies in their quest to promote democratic values, strengthen institutional foundations, and enrich societies. EDDE achieves these goals by developing and enhancing national-level digital strategic communication strategies and counter-disinformation policies, not only bolstering public trust in government communications but also combatting the influence of disinformation.
Since its beginning, EDDE has successfully trained hundreds of mid- and high-level government communications officers from 19 diverse countries, as well as intergovernmental and supranational organizations. As a direct result of EDDE’s involvement, several nations have taken significant steps by establishing new interagency coordination mechanisms, directorates, and offices.
The unwavering commitment of governments to drive EDDE’s programming forward is a testament to its effectiveness. Participants consistently recognize EDDE as a platform for fostering productive regional cooperation, transcending borders to achieve common goals.
In the coming years, EDDE is set to continue its invaluable work by convening multilateral workshops, training sessions, and knowledge exchanges for EDDE members. These activities will focus on strengthening participants’ expertise in crafting digital strategic communication campaigns, enhancing democratic resilience, and minimizing the influence of malign foreign interference. New to EDDE is an exciting partnership with Arizona State University, which aims to further expand capabilities and resources for the EDDE network. Simultaneously, this collaboration offers domestic students a unique opportunity to engage with, understand, and actively participate in the EDDE network.
EDDE remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing democracy, fostering cooperation, and combatting disinformation across Europe. As it enters a new chapter, the initiative is poised to make even greater steps in shaping a future where digital diplomacy strengthens democratic principles and stands as a bulwark against disinformation.
